Pet First Aid Tips

Caring for injured petsIt’s important to know first aid in case we ever need to help save another person’s life, but have you considered learning first aid for your pets? Dogs and cats are part of the family too and they can be just as susceptible to injury as people are. Today is a great day to get educated!

Basic knowledge of first aid can be just the thing that saves your pet if they become ill or get hurt. Knowing how to handle certain situations will also reduce the level of panic you feel in a serious situation – you’ll be able to think more clearly and quickly take action.

The American Veterinary Medical Association has put together useful information that educates people about pet first aid. Visit their website to learn about stocking a pet first aid kit, how to handle an injured pet, basic first aid procedures and how to prepare your pet for natural disasters.

Most importantly, have your pet’s veterinarian or emergency care center phone numbers at the ready. Consult with them to ensure that you’re providing proper medical care to your dog or cat.

Pets are a huge part of our lives, so staying educated and knowing what to do in an emergency situation is one of the best things we can do for them.

For even more first aid assistance, the American Red Cross has released the helpful Pet First Aid app that provides potentially lifesaving tips and information for dogs and cats.

The app includes videos, images, 25 common first aid emergencies and more. Download the app (it’s available for both iPhones and Androids) and familiarize yourself with it so you know how to use it should something happen to your furry friend.
